Government of India started Public Provident Fund commonly known as PPF in 1968.

PPF is still the most celebrated savings scheme after fixed deposits. It has a lock-in period of 15 years with max yearly contribution not exceeding 1,50,000/- INR (or) number of instalments not exceeding 12 with max amount at 1,50,000/- INR
